During the summer of 2024, Dortmund's management had identified Ousmane Dembele as a potential acquisition, reaching out to the player who was then plying his trade at Crystal Palace in England. The club deemed Dembele's skill set and developmental potential to be an ideal match for their requirements. But as Dortmund was mulling over the feasibility of covering the transfer fee, Bayern Munich unexpectedly entered the fray, complicating the negotiations. In the end, Dortmund was unable to match the exorbitant price tag of 53 million euros.
