Reflecting upon the situation now, one must ponder whether the Lakers should have pursued Duren with greater vigor, perhaps extending a full-fledged offer to the restricted free agent to gauge the Pistons' commitment to matching it? I have been contemplating this: What if the Pistons were to be candid now, would they lament their decision not to take the initial sign-and-trade offer seriously during the opening days of the off-season? Would they regret failing to engage in negotiations with the Lakers, thus missing out on the kind of compensation that the Jazz received in the trade for Walker Kessler? The Lakers had offered two first-round picks and two first-round swap rights, all without any protections attached. This was a substantial collection of draft assets.
